Walkers:
The walking program is designed for walkers of all abilities. Go Run has created a 28 week program that addresses the special challenges of walking a 1/2 marathon or full marathon. The program will slowly build mileage so participants will be able to reach the start line healthy. Our focus is building strength and endurance.
|
|
Runners:
All levels of runners are welcome. The beginner program focuses on increasing weekly mileage at a safe and healthy rate. Most beginner runners quit after a few weeks because they start out too fast. Our beginner program will keep you improving and motivated. We want beginners to feel welcome. For our more experienced runners the training schedule will include 2-3 long runs of 20-22 miles, threshold pace runs and interval training.
|
We can also help you train for: Marine Corp Chicago New York or any other fall marathon

Announcements March 7, 2010 Winter is giving up her fight! Our first March walk / run was much more pleasant than the January and February Saturdays! Finally! So, for those who have been hiding at home on these cold Saturdays you can come out and play with us again!
This Saturday we hit a milestone in the training schedule! Our level 1 members walked / ran 6 miles for the first time! They were very brave and no one panic ! They showed up and hit the trail! Way to go! You did it! You should be very pumped! Try not to get caught up in the speed trap! Focus on the mileage not the speed in which you finish in! You are building your base (your tendon, muscle, and bone strength). You can not hurry this process along! Base building takes time! So, just relax get the mileage in and the speed will come later! Remember no one in our group is focusing on your finishing time what they care about is that you had the courage to start this journey! Great job everyone you looked relaxed and strong out on the trail!
Check out this week seminar on Injury Prevention! Walking and running is a gift! We must listen to our bodies and remember our walking / running is a healthy lifestyle that we do not want taken away from us! Just ask all those who signed up for a half or full marathon this past year and had to stay home because of an injury! We must understand how injuries occur so we can take every prevented step to keep them away! I am not talking about the freak step in a hole injury but the chronic injury. To walk / run pain free we must focus on many factors: shoes, muscle strength, flexibility, rest, biomechanics, and training techniques. And don't forget where it hurts is the victim not the problem! So, if you have a pain on the top of your foot the problem is much higher probably in the calf area (tight calf muscles cause pulling on the tendons in the foot).
This week we are having both track workout and hill workout! Monday track workout at LaGrange Track 6:00pm (bring a towel for core workout) and Wednesday hill workout at the Civic Center 6:00pm (bring a towel for core)! Next Saturday March 13 is a regular walk / run since the Athlete's Corner 3 miler was moved to May 22. Our level 1 will do 5 miles and level 2 can chose between 8 or 10 miles!

Race Report: Mardi Gras Marathon March 1, 2010 Congratulations to all of our Go Run Members who rocked New Orleans Mardi Gras Marathon and Half-Marathon. We had over 50 Go Run Members who left their foot prints on the streets of New Orleans. Ever so often moments present themselves for a person to expose what they are really made of. You showed the world that you are strong, dedicated, and have guts! Most people do not ask for these occasions but us walkers and runners sign-up, pay money and take on challenges that push us to our limits. And we love every step! We ask for the horse to kick us, then we see how well we can get up and do it again! You should be very proud of yourself! And what a journey we had! It began back in the hot days of July as a small dream and finished on the streets of New Orleans! I am so proud of you!
A special thanks to Kelly, Lisa, and Julie S. (Julie’s Interns) for stepping up and taking care of everyone and answering questions the night before the race. You guys are awesome! Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to raise marathoners!
For all of you who stayed home and are curious what you missed! You missed it! What a great race! First, the weather was gorgeous with perfect temperatures and not a cloud in the sky! And second, the route was beautiful for the complete 26.2 miles! Third, the crowds were great and heavy through out the course. The bands were numerous and always playing good tunes. The water stations were friendly and there was ice in the cytomax. This is a race to put on your to do list!
Race day started as any typical race day! We had early pre-race Go Run Meeting and picture! We exchanged hugs and laughs then walked to the start together. After a nice walk we arrived at the start with about 45 minutes to race time. We dropped off our gear on the UPS trucks and located our corrals which all had port-cans in them. What a treat! The lines were short and you could stay with your buddies in the coral while visiting the K-Jons x3! I even used the K-Jon as we moved up to the start! Sweet! As we hung out in number 19 corral we got to see others members who couldn’t meet us at the hotel.
Even though the race day started out typical this was not going to be a typical race. This race was going to be very special. For Gene and myself were going to push Melissa (a wheelchair athlete) in her first Marathon! Three people coming together as one on a journey of inspiration. As the miles went by Melissa continue to thank us but we thanked her and explain that she was giving us a gift! She was giving the gift of courage, strength, and a reminder to not give up on your dreams not matter what! And she was not only giving us this gift she inspired the crowds, the walkers and the runners. She gave them energy to keep going. She was a lighthouse of guts!
The start was tricky but we got a hang of it after we bumped into 3 or 4 runners! We apologized over and over! As we ran our first mile we were interviewed by a runner from Washington D.C. and before we knew it we were in a grove moving through the beautiful homes. Melissa took a beating because the streets were so rough. We had great timing because we ran upon Lisa, Kelly, and Que just as we passed Sarah and Kathy cheering us on with butterfly balloons! After a few miles the halfers turned off and we were thankful to get some space. We started stripping around mile 5 in Audubon Park and lost our roll of toilet paper there! Bummer! Then the course took us down the most beautiful boulevard in America, St. Charles Street. The halfers were on one side and marathoners on the other side. The trees were still dripping with Mardi Gras beads! At the end of St. Charles we got into the same pace as a very loud-over-happy-runner who was playing with the crowd. After 45 minutes we started plotting how to lose the guy. Once we made it back to Canal Street we met up with the halfers again but they had a thinned out so it wasn’t so crowded. After we saw Julie we ran passed the historical Jackson Square and Café Du Monde which was packed! We ran by the French Market then turned on Esplanade and headed for City Park. It was nice since the halfers were on one side and marathoners on the other. We finally made it to City Park and saw Sarah and Kathy again. This time Sarah ran with us for a few steps holding her adult drink, butterfly balloons, and bag of candy. I grabbed a handful of Jolly Ranchers and offered them to the weary runners around us. I enjoyed those Jollies for the next 12 miles! Thanks Sarah and Kathy!
We then wrapped around City Park and at mile 16 we finally saw Melissa’s Krewe ( her Mom, Fred, Donna and her dog Gigdet). They wished us well and we moved on. We still had miles to go. But because of this pit-stop we finally lost the loud-over-happy-runner and got some peace! We notice at this point Melissa’s was getting sun burned. She was excited about it because she thought it was only right for suffer too along with us and our pounding feet. So, I felt better about it! Gene knew the next few miles very well since he grew up in that part of New Orleans and he filled us in on the hood! We were passing runners who were at their mile 24 and they cheered us on! Which was pretty awesome for them to dig deep and give us some of their energy at that point in the race. I know we helped them too!
We met the wall with a cheer, a drunk gang of Who Dat Fans, and a band. Now all we had was a 10k ahead of us. I was impressed the route was still beautiful. Also, at this point the route took us out for a weird one mile out and back. When we got to the one mile out, I started cheering because that was my mental milestone and I knew we were close. At this point we were now entering the zombie zone! The miles in which all care disappears and pain takes over. And many runners zone out and do the shuffle. But we were still strong! As we finished the out and back we cheered on runners going in! We told them to stay strong and keep their heads up. Those runners looked up at us and smiled and for a few steps they forgot about the pain.
We made it back to City Park and saw Gene’s father-in-law who cheered us on! We took a picture and we were off! Now we turned into the park but we still had another mile to go. Gene gave us a brief history of City Park and we saw a sick runner being cared for by her Krewe with an ice bag. Then she got into the hands-on-knee-throw-up position. Yuk! We made it to the front of City Park and had only .2 to go! We passed a another runner in pain who was raw all over and had a painful limp. But we were still strong!
As we near the finish the crowds thickened and the cheering became louder! I do not have the words to describe how we were feeling as we approached the finish line! What a moment! And to our surprise we saw the most beautiful sight. Our friends! They had waited for us! They believed in us and brought us home! They stuck around until all the soldiers came home! I am so touched! That was what the day was about! Friends! Friends being there for each other! Not because they had to but because they wanted too! I will never forget this journey and that finish line and the moment the Race Announcer called out Melissa’s name.

Expressing thanks……
With the successful completion of the Mardi Gras Marathon, I have so much to be grateful for.
First, of course, I give thanks to God – for it’s from Him that all blessings come! We should celebrate our tribulations – knowing that it brings about perseverance! And perseverance proves character. From that character we always have hope and that never disappoints!
Thanks to my family – I am blessed to have their devout support. All my love to Davina, Miesje, Marie, Lindsey, and Jessica!
I am grateful to have met and know Melissa Landry. She is an inspiration to all of us. Her spirited approach to this race and to life generates a light that shines brightly on everyone. I am blessed to be a part of that amazing world!
Thanks to Phyllis – my coach, my friend! I have learned so much from her and Sunday was another advanced course! She displays great strength and her wisdom to drive hard when she should and to be patient when its fitting is an art unto itself. Her unwavering encouragement and positive energy is what fueled us from start to finish!
As always, a big hug to Jules – the backbone and hero of Go Run!
Thanks to Lisa for her dedication to our training during the week – especially those grueling intervals on Thursdays! She makes the tough stuff look so easy! And, she always makes me feel stronger than I really am and faster than I will ever be!
And, of course, thanks to the whole Go Run Team – every wave, each word of encouragement, every smile, and each “shout out” on the roads on Saturday mornings is so meaningful! It unites us all into one great team!
Thanks again! Gene Zimmermann
